I had an '82 Super le tour, made in Japan of 1020 steel. I believe that is all for right now Thanks so much again. There is rust on the quick release hubs and the other ones up towards the front (please forgive my descriptions), can that be repaired easily? Painted, etc. With my pic of the crank housing (I think that is what it is), it is pretty rusty, can it be lubed down and be okay, or should it be replaced? I definitely want to ride this bike soon.ĭecals- The "Schwinn" is not on the frame anymore, and I am unsure if it said "Le Tour" on it as well. Seat- Same question, Is there a specific place to get one that resembles the present one? Is there a specific place to get them? I found schwinn ones on ebay brand new, two of them for 19.99, don't know if that is a good deal (I think it is?). Here is the list of things that I believe need to be repaired, please let me know, in your best judgement, what you think: I respect the judgement of the bike being 84 from greeneville. Okay all, thanks so much for the info, scooper for the pics and bob and well biked for their info. Looks like dizee 7's bike is an '84 model for sure. The '84 catalog doesn't show the mixte frame (but says it's available) but does say the Le Tour has water bottle bosses, uses Sun Tour's Micro-light ARX derailleurs, and brazed-on Top-Mount shifters, with Dia-Compe QS500N brakes. Rims: alloy Weinmans.Įdit: one more difference in the frames is the '84 has water bottle braze-ons on the downtube, the '83 has none.Right you are, well biked. on the '84 is also Suntour ARX, and the shifters are Suntour Symmetrix, on the downtube. I can see that the bike in the photo has the forged dropouts, and it also has a Suntour ARX rear der., which my '84 has. hanger), and the '84 is forged (with integral der. The '83 is stamped (with an adapter claw der. The only real difference in the frames, that I can tell, is the stamped vs. Thanks for the info Scooper.I've got both models ('83 le tour luxe, '84 le tour) in my basement. The same catalog ('83) shows Sun Tour ARX derailleurs for the Super Le Tour. Here's the 1983 catalog page showing Shimano Altus LT derailleurs for the Luxe and Shimano Altus ST derailleurs for the standard Le Tour. Since your headbadge date code is late 1983 and the frame was built in the U.S., it's almost a sure bet that it was built in Greenville, MS. The Greenville, MS, plant opened in mid-1981, and the Chicago plant was shut down completely before Christmas, 1983, but hadn't really been producing large numbers of bikes for some time. Schwinn didn't stamp date codes on headbadges in 1973, so your bike is clearly made in 1983, probably as a 1984 model. Schwinn - Chicago headbadges were used on bikes that weren't necessarily built in Chicago, because the company was headquartered there. Chicago was the corporate headquarters for Arnold, Schwinn & Co., and later Schwinn Bicycle Company from 1895 until the 1993 bankruptcy. Thanks.OK, let's see if we can clear this up. Sorry if I sound so ignorant about all of this, but I really interested in getting this bike back on the road and using it. Also, I guess it isn't Japan-made, cus the sticker that has the cro-moly info, says "Frame built in America". One other reflection, how can it be an 83 when everything that I have referred to place it as a 79? The headbadge also says Chicago. Scooper has catalogs (and a wealth of knowledge on this stuff), so he might be able to pinpoint it for you also. So that's another possibility.pics, and components would help a lot. I also remember that the Schwinn le tour 12.2, made in the late '70's, had chromoly "main tubes." The 12.2 designation was the weight of the complete bike, in kilograms. Example: 1303 would indicate it was assembled on the 130th day of 1983, assuming it's an '80's bike.Įdit: I also remember Bob Hufford (who knows a LOT about Schwinns and Schwinn serial numbers) saying that, at least at one time, a serial number starting with "SA" indicated a le tour. The first three will indicate the numerical day of the year the bike was assembled, and the last digit will indicate the last number of the year. And the third digit in your serial # might indicate 1983.Look on the headbadge and try and find four small numbers stamped on it. The reason I say that is that I remember from an earlier discussion, we determined that '83 was the first year for the Traveler to have a chromoly frame, but it only had chromoly "main tubes," not the stays. I don't understand your statement that you can't find a serial number that starts with "S" when the number you list starts with "S." ?.I could be way wrong about it being a Traveler, but it's fun to guess. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say '83 Traveler, frame built in Jan.
